Medical Laboratory Professionals Week occurs each year in the last full week of April. Lab Week, which originated in 1975, provides an opportunity to increase public awareness and understanding and appreciation for laboratory professionals. The observance is sponsored by American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

The UNLV Student Health Center (SHC) Laboratory is a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified moderate complexity laboratory and licensed by the State of Nevada. With one full-time and two per-diem lab professionals, the UNLV Laboratory continually delivers exceptional care to students and UNLV faculty and staff.
The laboratory has been accredited since 1996 by the Commission Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA), a national healthcare accreditation organization. Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards of quality in daily operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing, and pass a rigorous on-site accreditation survey, which is performed every two years.
In addition, the UNLV SHC Laboratory has been the proud recipient of the COLA Laboratory Excellence Awards for six consecutive accreditation surveys. Award recipients are selected from among the COLA laboratories found to be compliant with all required criteria and have demonstrated successful proficiency testing.
The Division of Student Affairs thanks the SHC Laboratory staff and leadership for their continued contributions to student, faculty, staff, and community health, particularly its contributions during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
